I have a new measure of IT literacy, thanks Andrew. When you carry out the task that you were trying to and it fails because windows is not updated, you check windows update. The statement ‘453 important updates’ means you mate is ignoring the prompt. Have you any idea how hard it is to apply this many in one batch? They contradict each other so you have to reboot a dozen times. I feel a training course coming on.
This morning when I left the flat I heard a noise like water rushing through a pipe. I checked my plumbing and found no defects so went about my day. This afternoon, whilst rebuilding laptops, I received a knock on the door. No less than three fireman which, given I am on the second floor, is a concern. Apparently the ground floor on the opposite side had flooded badly, guess I know where the water was going. The firemen told me that they had trashed the first floor door and not found the cause so they were looking to my vacant neighbours. I offer all respect to the emergency services, well two out of three ain’t bad, but they are a little keystone.
They decided that they couldn’t hear the water leaking and were about to leave when one of the three observed that they had isolated the water. So they were listening outside the door for a leak that they had already stopped. Obviously these guys are trained in fire, water is the antithesis of this so maybe its a step too far? Bless them they destroyed doors on the first and second floor then found the leak on the top floor. I guess it’s like the question of ‘where did you last have it’ in response to the loss of something. We always start the wrong end, bet my neighbours are wishing they started at the top!
I am often asked how I am doing and how the wrists are progressing, indeed I had a rare call from my sister yesterday and the first thing that she asked was ‘how is the healing?’ So I thought that this morning was an appropriate time for an update. I awoke this morning with a grinding ache in both wrists and the left shoulder having awoken several times in the night to the same experience, a set of press-ups worked through the creaks, cracks and pops that i now associate with exercise but didn’t alleviate the aches. My personal jury is out on exercise, I like to think that the cracks and pops as I push overcalcified and deformed joints past the limits that they try to impose is extending their range but I think it may be akin to trying to turn back the tide. I lifted the kettle to make a cup of tea despite the stabbing pain in lefty and proceeded to brush my hair as righty complained, brushing my teeth resulted in a stabbing pain as the wrist voiced its concern over the angles involved. An interesting challenge was presented. as it often is, by an itch on my shoulder the itch itself was OK but my hands no longer reach that area so scratching involved the careful use of my hairbrush.
A battle always ensues when I attempt to get tension on my belt and the laces of my boot and then I sat down to pen this update, my fingers and wrists are not enjoying the angles needed to type on the BlackBerry* and it takes some willpower to overcome the flinch reaction that seeks to eject the handset from my grip. What the physioterrorists see as an amazing attitude and success is actually little more than determination and ignorance, in my defence you can’t teach an old dog new tricks and brute force and ignorance has served me well so far in life. I am well aware that I have exceeded the normal healing and am now eating into the area of increased pain and probably reducing the amount of time I will have tolerable pain levels whilst increasing the mess that old age is rushing towards me with, but hey there is no point in living your life now to protect the future, to quote Horace “Carpe diem quam minimum credula poster”or seize the day and put as little trust as possible in the next day.
To return to the question of how is it going, its going OK, you see the limits are reset in a similar manner to the way that my mate Dave has reset his audio limits to cope with the nightmare of tinnitus. To remove the slow grinding pain now would be like putting Dave in a silent room, it’s a companion now and to lose it would take some getting used to.
