The human body is an amazing machine, the ability to heal and rebuild is nothing short of astounding. The issue with the human body is that it is operated by an idiot, yes I do realise I am a very good example! In my defence that is not the only issue there is also the interface issue, I have concluded that this is where the real problem lies. Somewhere along the line we have taken a machine that surpasses what we, as mere men, can achieve and we have screwed up the interface.
They say that this is Apple’s success, that the interface was leap years ahead of the product because they realised the interface was the most critical part. Now I hate Apple with a passion but I cannot deny that they are the worlds largest company so perhaps there is something in this. I have concluded that the human body was built by engineers, I see such similarities in my everyday life so it must be true. Engineers are the geniuses of the world it is us that control the environment and challenge nature. Without engineers you wouldn’t have your car, wouldn’t be able to fly but also wouldn’t have beaten so many diseases or contoured so many spaces. We are the people that expand the world whilst simultaneously shortening distances.
But as engineers we don’t operate in the normal world, we innovate and invent but we don’t polish. If there were only engineers in the world then all cars would be rear wheel drive, we look at a problem, solve it and move on. Not for us the polishing and adapting, to our complicated minds it make sense so why waste time with frivolity like instructions after all there are so many more challenges. The human body has, so far, missed the polishing stage as well. Look at teeth, two sets of porcelain that are repeatedly ground together well that’s your engineer selecting the correct materials and producing the machine. But teeth have nerves in, why is that? Well that will have been a modification that we didn’t get around to completing after all it’s obvious that you don’t want to break them right?
The reason for this post? It’s been a tough weekend, my wrists are really arguing about life and shoulders, knees and elbows are getting in on the act. Theses body parts have healed far better than expected, the bone, muscle and tendons have adapted to accommodate the metalwork that bridges fragile fractures. The engineering side has performed miraculously, not perfect but miles better than I could have imagined. The nerves, my interface with the skin and bones, is not so good like a user interface running Dos it just doesn’t do it justice. Rather than neat swipes and a smooth interface that hides the inner machinations I have an engineers interface that tells me every detail that is incorrect, every odd nuance and it tells me this with pain.
There is no real purpose to the aches and pains, in Apple speak its like seeing the hex code that drives your app its irrelevant and means nothing. My movements are limited and that is a physical tangible thing, the gnawing ache is pointless. If your app stalls you restart it you don’t need a scrolling code telling you that the app is imperfect, it would serve no purpose. I was very keen to spend some time on the other project this weekend but have been in too much pain to type for any length of time. I didn’t want to start and then have to stop because that is too frustrating, for those following the story don’t worry the words are still in my mind.
I guess that’s where Ms Nature lies, she is the loose wiring, the poor interface and the needless feedback. It’s ok though because I am an engineer and is understand the mechanics behind this so I will continue to treat the whole thing as a mechanical project. I will continue to shake the hands of people that seem to want to tear my hands off. I will continue to refuse to use my teeth to open screw top bottles, grip issues make them near impossible, that’s not how they are meant to be opened. Am I right? Who knows, but this is the mindset that put men on the moon and submarines under the ocean we have beaten the natural world and hey what more has Ms Nature got?
