Heading to hospital for CT scan via Ipswich train station, a station I haven’t visited in many years. As I got off the train I looked over the small freight yard and remembered recovering a failed train there as a fresh faced 20 year old BR technician. Funny how I can still recall the schoolboy delight of Saturday overtime on our self built engineers train resplendent with full bacon roll facilities!
So over the footbridge I went, heading for the exit, and was met by a not unpleasant but familiar smell. I have never commuted from Ipswich and would nor have had a need to use the station during that Saturday years ago, so why the recollection? Then it struck me, I was a signal tech at Ipswich and the familiarity comes from late nights on call in the relay room when a stroll down a deserted station was rewarded with a chocolate bar from the vending machine! Strange the associations formed in the mind and never lost.
